Stroberi atau tepatnya stroberi kebun (juga diketahui dengan nama arbei, dari bahasa Belanda aardbei) yakni sebuah varietas stroberi yang paling banyak diketahui di dunia. Seperti spesies lain dalam genus Fragaria (stroberi), buah ini berada dalam keluarga Rosaceae. Buah stroberi berwarna hijau keputihan saat sedang berkembang, dan pada kebanyakan spesies berubah menjadi merah saat masak. Namanya berasal dari bahasa Inggris kuno streawberige yang adalah gabungan dari streaw atau "straw" dan berige atau "berry". Alasan pemberian nama ini masih tak terang. Ada lebih dari 20 spesies Fragaria di segala dunia. Kunci pengelompokan spesies stroberi ini yakni menurut jumlah kromosomnya. Ada tujuh variasi kromosom utama yang terdapat di segala spesies. Sebagian spesies yakni diploid ialah memiliki dua pasang dari ketujuh kromosom mewujudkan jumlahnya 14 kromosom. Yang lainnya adalah tetraploid ialah mempunyai empat pasang dari ketujuh kromosom mewujudkan jumlahnya 28 kromosom, hexaploid (6 pasang), oktoploid (8 pasang) atau dekaploid (10 pasang).
The garden strawberry was first bred in Brittany, France, in the 1750s via a cross of Fragaria virginiana from eastern North America and Fragaria chiloensis, which was brought from Chile by Amédée-François Frézier in 1714.Cultivars of Fragaria × ananassa have replaced, in commercial production, the woodland strawberry (Fragaria vesca), which was the first strawberry species cultivated in the early 17th century.
The strawberry is not, from a botanical point of view, a berry. Technically, it is an aggregate accessory fruit, meaning that the fleshy part is derived not from the plant's ovaries but from the receptacle that holds the ovaries.[4] Each apparent "seed" (achene) on the outside of the fruit is actually one of the ovaries of the flower, with a seed inside it.
